Empire State of Mind is a song by American rapper Jay-Z. It features vocals from American R&B singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. After the song was released to iTunes on September 8, 2009 and the album reached #1 shortly after, it hit the fiftieth position on the Billboard Hot 100, with more than 40,000 downloads. The next week it rose to number five, becoming Carter’s sixteenth top 10 hit and Keys’ ninth. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed this song at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Due to downloads and positive reviews and reception, it will be released as the third single. The song has already reached #2 on the iTunes top 100 in the UK and #3 on the UK Singles Chart as of September, 27 2009. The song reached #2 in the Irish Singles Chart on September 25, 2009 with no official release, due to the track being massively popular on music downloads.

“Empire State of Mind” is an anthemic hip hop song that features sampling from “Love on a Two-Way Street” by The Moments with influences of electropop and orchestra pop. Rumor is that fellow New York MC Nas was supposed to be featured on the song but declined because of a busy touring schedule and his ongoing work with Damian Marley on their collaboration album titled Distant Relatives, but he would be featured in the official remix. The song is an anthem to his hometown, New York City and its title references the Nas song, “N.Y. State of Mind”. The song peaked at # 1 on iTunes and #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
